The Professor’s House, novel by Willa Cather, published in 1925, in which the protagonist, a university professor, confronts middle age and personal and professional loneliness. Professor Godfrey St. Peter has completed his significant academic work on Spanish explorers in North America. His daughters have married; his favourite student, Tom Outland, who had explored ancient cliff dwellings in New Mexico, has died in World War I; and his wife has moved into a new house.
