New York Islanders, American professional ice hockey team based in Brooklyn, New York, that plays in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Islanders have won four Stanley Cup titles (1980–83). Founded in 1972, the Islanders—based in Uniondale, New York, for their first 42 seasons—were named after the team’s location on Long Island. The team finished well below .500 in their first two seasons.
