George S. Patton was only a middling student at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., from which he graduated in 1909. He was, however, an excellent athlete, with a talent that served him well when he participated in the 1912 Stockholm Games as a pentathlon competitor. That Patton qualified for the individual modern pentathlon is no surprise.
