Schmidt sting pain index, measure of the relative amount of pain that various insects of the order Hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps, etc.) can cause humans, with both numerical ratings and sommelier-like verbal descriptions. The Schmidt sting pain index bears the name of its creator, American entomologist Justin O. Schmidt (1947–2023), who estimated that he was stung more than 1,000 times by various insects over the course of his career.
