Pipe Spring National Monument, historic site on the Kaibab Paiute Indian reservation, northern Arizona, U.S. It was established in 1923 and covers 40 acres (16 hectares). Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) and, later, Kaibab Paiute peoples lived in the region, sustained by water from the spring. Mormon settlers arrived in the 1860s and sometime after 1870 built a fortified ranch house known as Winsor Castle to protect them from Navajo attacks and to serve as headquarters for a cattle-ranching operation. The ranch was a stopover for travelers on the Arizona Strip (the northwestern corner of the state north of the Grand Canyon). ...(100 of 193 words)
