Japanese American internment

At right are the offices of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the oldest Asian American civil rights organization in the United States. Shortly after this photo was taken, the Wartime Civil Control Administration (WCCA) took over the JACL building and repurposed it as a Civil Control Station for the collection and processing of “people of Japanese descent” prior to their transport to detention camps.

On February 19, 1942, U.S. Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, giving the U.S. military the authority to exclude any persons from designated areas. Although the word Japanese did not appear in the order, it was clear that Japanese Americans were the focus of the initiative. On March 18, 1942, the federal War Relocation Authority (WRA) was established to “take all people of Japanese descent into custody, surround them with troops, prevent them from buying land, and return them to their former homes at the close of the war.” In the 1943 edition of the Britannica Book of ...(100 of 142 words)
