Timothy Parsons (born Nov. 1, 1932, Colombo, Ceylon [now Sri Lanka]) is a Canadian marine biologist who advocated a holistic approach to studying ocean environments. Parsons attended McGill University, Montreal, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture (1953), a master’s degree in agricultural chemistry (1955), and a doctorate in biochemistry (1958). He took a position as a research scientist at the Fisheries Research Board of Canada in 1958 but left in 1962 for a post in the Office of Oceanography at UNESCO in Paris; he returned to the Fisheries Research Board in 1964.
