Ollanta Humala (born June 27, 1962, Lima, Peru) was a former Peruvian army commander and politician who led an unsuccessful military coup against Peruvian Pres. Alberto Fujimori in 2000 and later served as president himself (2011–16). Humala joined the army in 1982 and received training at the U.S. Army-run School of the Americas, which trained Latin American officers. In the 1990s, as an army captain, he commanded a counterinsurgency unit during the Peruvian government’s fight against the revolutionary organization Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso).
