Mark Shields (born May 25, 1937, Weymouth, Massachusetts, U.S.—died June 18, 2022, Chevy Chase, Maryland) was an American political columnist and television commentator best known as a pundit on the Cable News Network (CNN) political debate show Capital Gang, which aired from 1988 to 2005, and on The NewsHour, a nightly news program airing on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Shields graduated with a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in 1959.
