Gordon B. Hinckley (born June 23, 1910, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.—died Jan. 27, 2008, Salt Lake City) was the 15th president (1995–2008) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon church. Hinckley helped to expand the church from some 9 million to nearly 13 million members worldwide and led it from the margins to the mainstream of American society. Hinckley was descended from pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower and from Mormon pioneers who moved from Illinois to Utah in the 19th century.
