Constance Markievicz (born February 4, 1868, London, England—died July 15, 1927, Dublin, Ireland) was an Anglo-Irish countess and political activist who was the first woman elected to the British Parliament (1918), though she refused to take her seat. She was also the only woman to serve in the first Dáil Éireann (Irish Assembly), in which she acted as minister of labour (1919–22). Constance Gore-Booth was born into the Anglo-Irish aristocracy and grew up at her family’s estate, Lissadell, in County Sligo, Ireland.
