vervet, (genus Chlorocebus), any of six known species of widely distributed semiarboreal African monkeys. Vervet monkeys are quadrupedal and occur throughout sub-Saharan Africa in savannas and dry deciduous forests. They may be found as far north as Egypt or as far south as South Africa.
